Credit report : your credit rights
By law, your credit report can only be accessed by selected organisations - typically banks, building societies and other financial organisations - though prospective employers and landlords can be allowed access too.
The Law is on your side because your credit report contains sensitive information regarding your finances which is not to be used in the public domain. It is imperative that you understand your legal rights as well as understand who has rights of access to the information held on your credit report.
The Data Protection Act and Consumer Credit Act both have restrictions in place as to who can access your credit information, as well as what the information therein can be used for.
Credit reference agencies such as Equifax have also implemented further rules and regulations to ensure that the customer receives a good service.
By law, you have the right to:
- Dispute inaccurate information on your credit file and have errors corrected within 28 days
- Be posted a copy of your Credit Report within 7 working days of having made a request
If you ever have any doubts about disclosing your personal information to someone or agreeing to your credit file being checked, then do not feel pressurised in to agreeing to it.
